Early in my career, I started noticing a pattern.
At important, high-stakes events, the photographer hired by the client would occasionally not show up. Sometimes it was a car issue, sometimes illness, life happens. But the result was always the same: a great moment went undocumented, leaving nothing to leverage for social media or press.
So I made a decision.
I learned photography myself and made it a habit to always have a professional camera on hand as a backup.
I studied the craft, learned the fundamentals and built enough confidence to step in when needed. Looking back, that decision has paid off many times over. I’m not a professional photographer by any stretch, but I can handle the essentials when it matters most.
The unexpected bonus? I genuinely fell in love with photography and it’s since become one of my favorite creative outlets.
The takeaway:
Invest in expanding your skill set. The more you can anticipate and adapt, the better you can serve your clients when things don’t go as planned.
Below is a sample photo I took of the harbor in San Diego, California, a reminder that sometimes your “backup plan” turns into something you truly enjoy.
